The medals received by the prize laureates were designed in 1985 by Mr. Yusaku Kamekura, then President, Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc., and were specially cast at mint bureau, ministry of finance, Japan.
Commenting on his work, Mr. Kamekura said, "In the primary design, I used the image of the sun, the source of all energy. The circles were added to represent perfection and truth."
The citations received by the prize laureates were also designed by Mr. Yusaku Kamekura. The certificates were inscribed with the recipients' names and reasons for the awards, as well as the following citation;
"WHEREAS you, sir, have made a signal contribution to the progress of science and technology and to the prosperity and peace of mankind through science and technology, in recognition of your distinguished contributions, the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan has the privilege and honour to bestow upon you the Japan Prize."
